He was born in 1932 in the city of Leninakan /now Gyumri/.

After finishing the secondary school # 16 of Leninakan he entered the mechanical faculty of Yerevan Polytechnic Institute and in 1955 graduated from it, receiving the engineer-mechanic degree.

He worked at the Radio-technical factory of the city of Alexandrov of RF Vladimir region. Returning to Yerevan, he began his working experience in Yerevan newly formed milling machine plant as shop superintendent, head of production.

In 1962-1975 he worked in the Scientific Research Institute of machine-tool construction as chief designer, then - from 1969 - director of experimental factory.

In 1975 he was appointed chief director of Yerevan Machine-tool Construction Production Association. In 1982 he was appointed Chief Director of Yerevan Aluminium Plant /Kanaz/, where he worked till 2000. In 2000 the "Armenal" Close Joint Stock Company (CJSC) based on the Kanaz base was set up, the 100% shareholder of which is Rusal Russian Company, and Robert Yengoyan is elected in the post of the Chairman of Directors' Council of that company, and is there up to now.

He's an Honoured engineer of the Republic of Armenia, laureate of the competitions of science and technique of the Republic of Armenia, candidate of technical sciences.

He was elected a deputy of two convocations of the session of Yerevan City Council, of two convocations of the session of the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Republic, of the second and third convocations of the sessions of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia.
